GEORISK - Geology Tour Activity

In this rather long VR-capture a comprehensive tour of all the included data und functionality is given.
It includes 3D visualizations ranging from fundamental Geology topics to Paleontology and Mineralogy.

Using Unreal Engine's template for collaborative applications it allows multiple desktop and VR systems to be connected and to communicate in real time.

The visualization of planet Mercury is based on data from NASA's Messenger mission and also includes a layer from the integrated publication.

The included fossile modeles have been created by the Evolution & Diversity Dynamics Lab and can be found here. The animated dinosaur models have been exported from the Microsoft 3D Viewer application. A peacock sound near the pterodactyl as well as the iconic T-Rex roar from the first Jurassic Park movie may also be triggered during the demo. Text details on the Sketchfab models can be triggered inside the visualization.
An interactive 3D representations of the related scientific publication has been included as scientific reference.

The mineralogy part has been developed in close collaboration with the Laboratoire de Minéralogie et de Cristallochimie. The crystal models are based on data from the American Mineralogist Crystal Structure Database. They have been generated and exported from VESTA.

GEORISK - Einstein Telescope GERMANE project

Uses the Cesium Ion plugin for Unreal Engine to visualise imported satellite data preprocessed with Paraview.

Includes the location of two corner reflectors installed for continuous monitoring.

Our group analyses multiple types of geohazards in seismically active regions that require an integrated prospection and modelling approach.

In the field we apply active seismics and ambient noise techniques, to be combined with electrical resistivity tomography, transient electromechanics performed by partner institutes. We can analyse data with single or coupled data inversion techniques and represent related outputs in 3D geomodels, including also strucural geology and topographic data. Landslide and earthquake ground motion dynamics are analysed through 2D or 3D numerical modelling.

Visualisation of inputs and outputs is supported by virtual reality technology (using Vive and Oculus devices). Now, we are preparing a collaborative virtual reality system allowing several people to visit a model together.

GEORISK - Palaeozoology in VR

This interactive visualization uses the Unreal Engine with the Landscape Pro plugin.
It contains models and animations from Sketchfab and the Microsoft 3D Viewer application.
Many of the contained fossils have been scanned and modeled by the Evolution & Diversity Dynamics Lab and can be found here. Additional information about the finite elements simulation code used for the inferior feline jaw and the corresponding research can be found by following the corresponding links. The first few seconds of the iconic Jaws movie soundtrack are playing close to the shoreline near the Megalodon. And a peacock sound can be heard near the pterodactyl as well as the T-Rex roar from the first Jurassic Park movie may also be triggered during the demo.
Text details on the Sketchfab models can be triggered inside the visualization.
Interactive 3D representations of subject related scientific publications and posters have been included in the demo as references.

GEORISK - CaCO3 and Minerals in Mixed Reality

Compare Calcite and Aragonite structures on the macroscopic and the atomic scales. Developed with stereokit this Coulomb physics demo includes crystal structures prepared with help from the "Laboratoire de Minéralogie et de Cristallochimie". They're based on data from the American Mineralogist Crystal Structure Database, and have been exported from VESTA. The included mineral models from Sketchfab: Most of the shown Specimen are from the teaching collections of the Paleontological Research Institution. Models by Emily Hauf.
